Govt commits to transparency, accountability
Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, citizen participation and responsive governance as the country commemorates Open Gov Week 2026 under the Open Government Partnership (OGP).
Open Gov Week is a global initiative that brings together governments and civil society to reflect on progress made in advancing transparency, accountability and citizen participation, while promoting new commitments and reforms aimed at strengthening open governance.

A statement signed by OGP national point of contact in the Office of the President and Cabinet Reinford Mwangonde stressed that Malawi remains dedicated to advancing open governance reforms through the implementation of its National Action Plan.
The plan focuses on five key thematic areas, namely anti-corruption, fiscal openness, digital governance, natural resources governance and climate and environment.
It said these reforms are aimed at strengthening integrity in public institutions, improving transparency in public procurement systems and enhancing public trust.
The statement further noted that Malawi’s participation in the Open Gov Challenge underscores its commitment to strengthening accountability through open contracting and beneficial ownership transparency as key reform tools.
Reads the statement in part: “As part of this year’s commemoration, the CSOs Platform on OGP Malawi will hold a webinar on ‘Open Contracting and Beneficial Ownership Transparency’ to strengthen accountability in public procurement under Malawi’s Open Gov Challenge, which promotes transparency, integrity and public2 trust with the participation of government, civil society, development partners, the media and citizens.”
However, governance experts and human rights activists have cautioned that the commitments must be matched with concrete action if they are to restore public trust.
Centre for Social Transparency and Accountability executive director Willy Kambwandira yesterday said while the commitment is encouraging, government must move beyond policy declarations and demonstrate real implementation.
